 Ellipse

Question: The major axis and minor axis of an ellipse are 100 mm & 60 mm respectively. Draw half of the ellipse by an arc of circle method & other half by the rectangle method.
Solution:
The major axis and minor axis of an ellipse are 100 mm & 60 mm respectively. Draw the half of the ellipse by arc of circle method & other half by rectangle method.
Procedure:
  1. Draw a rectangle taking major and minor axes as sides or as per the question.
  2. Select the upper left part of the rectangle. Divide the vertical small side and horizontal long side into the same number of equal parts. (here divided into five parts.) (Don't know how to divide a line into equal parts? to know, click here.)
  3. Name the points as given in the figure.
  4. Connect all vertical points 1,2,3,4 to the upper end of the minor axis(point C). Repeat same for the point D.
  5. Extend line C1  up to D4 and mark the point. Similarly extend C2, C3, and C4 lines up to D2, D3, and D4 lines and mark all the points.
  6. Connect all the marked points.
  7. Half ellipse is ready!
  8. Now for the other half, taking AO distance from D mark F1 and F2 on line AB.
  9. On line F2-O, take any distance mark points 1,2,3, and 4.
  10. Taking the F2 center, with distance  B1 draw an arc above AB, and taking the F1 center, with A1 distance cut this arc.
  11. Repeat these steps with the same centers but taking now B2 and A2 distances for drawing arcs.
  12. Similarly get all other points.
  13. Connect all the points by a smooth curve to get an ellipse.
